I live in the Alps, right now next to the big ski areas in Tirol. Here, hiking is part of the day rather than a weekend plan. Most evenings I walk a round near the house, and somewhere along it I stop thinking. The mountains, a stream, the wind, and after a while my head goes quiet on its own.

On a longer day the hut is the point. I take a different route when I can, order a small drink, talk to the host for a while. The menu can be excellent and I will still leave fast if the room is wrong. That has surprised me for years. A wrong room can push me back out in a minute, something the forest has never done.

The things that push me out are specific. A smell of old fat from the kitchen. Noise. Cold. A tiled floor where there used to be wood. Neon light. When the hut keeps the outside going, wood, warm light, an open fire, the quiet from the walk stays with me until a hard, modern room drops it at once.

In Tirol I have watched this shift. At the big resorts the old warmth is going. Central phone charging stations arrive, modern furniture, a lot of exposed concrete. City architecture is moving up the mountain. The old version was mass catering, dripping currywurst and fries piled to the edge of the tray. The new one is clean design, open rooms, plenty of light and even more efficiency. Efficiency is the real brief in mountain tourism now, and slowing down and lingering have moved to the back.

For a long time I took this for my own sensitivity. Then I looked for whether anyone had measured it.

Ulrich, 1991

They had. Roger Ulrich ran an experiment in 1991 that is still among the most cited in environmental psychology (Ulrich et al., 1991, Journal of Environmental Psychology). He showed 120 subjects a stress film about workplace accidents, then one of six videos of natural or urban settings. He tracked four body responses: heart rate, skin conductance, facial muscle tension and pulse transit time, which tracks blood pressure.

Within about four minutes the difference between the groups was showing in the physiological measures. The nature group recovered faster and more completely, and its recovery did not stop at baseline. Mood after the nature video was more positive than before the stress film had started.

One thing stayed with me. The natural settings were dominated by vegetation or water, and the split that mattered was nature against city.

Ulrich could not prove the mechanism. He proposed a parasympathetically dominated state, a wakeful and relaxed attention close to meditation with the eyes open. Since reading that I notice the state more deliberately. His 1991 paper has several thousand citations.

Hartig, 2003

Twelve years later Terry Hartig took the question out of the lab (Hartig et al., 2003, Journal of Environmental Psychology). His 112 subjects walked either through a nature reserve or through a city. Before and after, each group sat in a room. The nature group’s room had a view of trees. The city group’s had no window.

The room alone did work. In the first ten minutes of sitting, diastolic blood pressure dropped significantly for the people looking at trees and not for those in the windowless room. Then came the walk. After 30 minutes the systolic blood pressure of the nature group was about 6 mmHg below the city group. When the walkers turned around and came back, the values moved together again. The body was reacting to the direction of travel.

Attention and blood pressure moved separately in his data and did not correlate. Two different paths. Attention barely improved in nature. What it offered instead was recovery from city life. Anger fell in the reserve and rose in the city. Hartig singled that out, because anger is clinically relevant, tied to heart disease and violence.

There was also the drive. 40 minutes behind the wheel raised systolic blood pressure by almost 8 mmHg. That was the approach to the site, not part of the experiment, and it still showed up in the numbers. Hartig’s study is among the most cited field studies in environmental psychology.

The two paths explain something I feel every time. After hours outside I am awake and at the same time so calm that any disturbance stands out. The body is deeply relaxed and the attention is sharp. That is why I notice the cold floor, the wrong light, the smell the moment I step into the wrong hut. In a city I would walk past all of it, because my attention would already be spent. This is the state Ulrich measured in 1991. I have run into it in the wrong room ever since.

Koivisto, 2022

One more result changed how I read my own reaction. Koivisto showed in 2022 that where you grew up shapes how you respond to cities (Koivisto & Grassini, 2022, Journal of Environmental Psychology). People raised in nature find cities more unpleasant. Growing up outside sharpens the response to the built world. I take that as a reason to keep going out every day.

Built against the evidence

The data is decades old, heavily cited and uncontested. Owners still build huts with tiled floors. The same gap runs through kindergartens without windows, air-conditioned open-plan offices, hospital patients with no view of a tree.

The measurements are precise. About four minutes for the body to react, 6 mmHg from a walk, 8 mmHg from a drive. A parent picks a child’s room, an owner signs off on a new hut and an employee ends up in an office for eight hours. Each choice runs against the same measurements: the four minutes, the 6 mmHg and the 8 mmHg.
